Punk Spriit & Bloody Catharsis: The Films of Alice Maio Mackay
2 Seasons
Alice Maio Mackay is a trans Australian filmmaker whose fearless queer aesthetics and DIY spirit have redefined indie horror. Born in Adelaide in 2004, she’s already written, directed, and produced six features in just four years—including Bad Girl Boogey, T Blockers, Satranic Panic, Carnage for Christmas, among others. Through her banner One Manner Productions, Mackay blends Ozploitation energy, camp flair, and community-driven filmmaking—thriving on micro-budgets, breakneck schedules, and passionate queer crews. Her films are genre-bending showcases of queer joy, found family, and bloody catharsis, from the worm-ridden satire of T Blockers to Satranic Panic’s road-trip demon-slaying steeped in grief, romance, and musical numbers. Influenced by cult heroes like Gregg Araki, John Waters, and Robert Rodriguez, Mackay channels lo-fi aesthetics and punk spirit into stories that are as defiantly queer as they are gleefully gory. At only 20 years old, Alice Maio Mackay isn’t just making movies—she’s building a trans-celebratory, horror-infused world all her own. If genre cinema is alive and evolving, it’s trembling with Mackay’s pulse.
